Frederick Carlton 19th C. Oil Thirlmere Cumbria
We are offering for sale this lovely English landscape oil painting on canvas by an artist who signed himself Fred. Carter in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts, as far as we have been able to ascertain, Thirlmere in Cumbria, which has been since 1894, a large reservoir supplying Manchester with water through pipelines. The reservoir was created by damming two lakes in close proximity and drowning the valley. The water level has been raised over the years causing the demolition of houses and villages in the valley, the end of farming and the slopes were forrested with conifers to save erosion. There is a small croft with a turf roof to the left of the lake and a small flock of sheep in the foreground, with their shepherd on the path.
Frederick Carlton was a 19th Century artist, active supposedly around 1895-1899, although he never dated his work, so this can't be verified. It is our belief that this name is a pseudonym for another artist, as no such person exists according to the Register of Births and Census records with an occupation as an artist.
However, it is an extremely competent work and many of his paintings have been sold at auction, reaching prices well in excess of £1,000 for some of the larger ones. The locations of his paintings may be found in various places in England, but there have been several in Cumbria, including another of Thirlmere.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/4" gilt frame and slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Provenance: Danson Gallery
Image size: 19" x 11" - 48.25cm x 27.95cm
Frame size: 25 3/4" x 17 5/8" - 65.4cm x 44.75cm
Medium: Oils on relined canvas
Condition: Very good. The canvas is clean and taut. The painting was relined, cleaned and restored in March of 1988, according to the card from the Danson Gallery that came with the painting. The frame is new.
