Frank Hider Oil Fisherman in Highland Landscape Frank Hider 1861-1933 Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this very well executed sunset scene of the Highlands of Scotland by the artist Frank Hider, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso 'The Close of a Summer's Day'. The painting depicts a sunset landscape, with a fisherman standing by the edge of a river with a mountainous backdrop. There are Hider's trademark white flowers in the foreground, which seem to appear in all his landscapes.

This is a quote from Jeremy Wood's book Hidden Talents. 'Frank Hider was a painter in oil and sometimes watercolour of coastal scenes and rural landscapes. This artist was very prolific and his work is frequently seen on the market - the beach scenes in oil being the most common. The oils were often inscribed with the title and location on the reverse. Frank Hider's style and colour are similar to S. Y. Johnson but he usually painted with a broader technique. There are also some similar oils signed George Hider and he may have been related. Frank Hider lived at Forest Gate, Essex for a number of years and died on the 29th November, 1933.'

On a personal note, Frank Hider was born in Lambeth, South London in 1861. He married Laura Ann Hill in 1885 and by 1901 they were living at 10 Westbury Road, Selhurst, Croydon. By 1911, they had moved to 99 Boleyn Road, Forest Gate, Essex. Altogether they had 8 children, 6 of whom survived infancy, 3 daughters Mable C, Violet and Evelyn and 2 sons, Frank Jr. and Christopher George.

Frank Jr. (1894-1916) died during WW1 as a Private in the Duke of Edinburgh's Wiltshire Regiment during the campaign in Mesopotamia. Christopher George (1885-1991) was an art student in 1911 and, as there are paintings similar to those of Frank on the market, but signed G. Hider, these may well be his.

There are also similar paintings on the market signed M. C. Hider, and these as well as the ones signed G. Hider have mainly be attributed as pseudonyms of Frank, but in the Census of 1911, Mable C. (1888-1958) was listed as an artist working on her own account at home, so these are obviously hers.

Auction results for Frank Hider's work can be found at artprice.com (289 results), artnet.com (52) findartinfo.com (190) and arcadja.com (114). One of his oil paintings reached in excess of £950.

The painting is framed in a 1 3/4" rope twist decorated gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
