Framed set of 4 Georgian fencing prints, c.1809
This is an attractive set of four original copperplate engravings of fencing positions with later hand-colouring recently framed by an off-white coloured mount and gilt moulding.
The four engravings are titled "Half Circle Guard and St. George's Guard", "Spanish Guard and Italian Guard", "Outside Hanging Guard and Inside Hanging Guard" and "Outside Guard and Inside Guard" respectively.
Drawn by C. Elliott, engraved by J. Chapman and published by John Wilkes, 1806, in Encyclopaedia Londinensis or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, Comprehending, Under One General Alphabetical Arrangement, all the Words and Substance of Every Kind of Dictionary Extant in the English Language. In which the Improved Departments of the Mechanical Arts, the Liberal Sciences, the Higher Mathematics, and the Several Branches of Polite Literature, are Selected from the Acts, Memoirs, and Transactions, of the Most Eminent Literary Societies, in Europe, Asia, and America.
