Four Early Works By Paul Bowen c.1980.

Set of four early original works by the Welsh born abstract artist Paul Bowen c.1980 relating to the Island of Bardsey off the tip of the Lleyn peninsula in North West Wales. Semi-abstract charcoal, pen and pastel drawings on heavy artist’s paper, each signed in the lower right hand corner. Presented mounted behind glass in simple pale oak frames measuring 18″ x 22″. Traces of paper labels to the reverse of each besides which is a second signature and the title (in Bowen’s hand) Bardsey 1,2,3, & 4.
The sculptor and artist Paul Bowen is best known in the North Eastern United States of Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut where he built a reputation during the 30 years he lived in Provincetown, Cape Cod, building small scale sculptures from sea-worn materials collected along the coast. Bowen hails originally from Colwyn Bay (just a few miles from our warehouse) where his interest in the sea was first sparked, and where we purchased these four originals from a house built by his parents in the early 1980’s.
Known as the island of 20,000 saints Bardsey Island or Ynys Enlli was the site of 6th century monastery built by Saint Cadfan after which it became a important centre for medieval worship. Pilgrimage to Bardsey and burial there was held to be extremely beneficial to the chances of your soul making it to heaven. Among the many legends which cluster around Ynys Enlli is its claim as the possible burial site for King Arthur. It features heavily in Welsh art and literature and is now a precious unspoilt home to much rare wildlife.
