Fine Verbenas Lithograph. James Andrews. 1958.
When faced with the pressures of challenging and uncertain times flowers can act as a powerful remedy and are linked to a person’s happiness, both immediate and long term. They can relieve stress, lift spirits, and ease away depression symptoms and anxiety. Flowers make us happy by triggering the happy brain chemicals: dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. Historically, flowers triggered dopamine for our hunter-gatherer ancestors because they marked the coming of abundance after a hungry winter. Now, the blossoming of a flower triggers the sense that something special is coming. Serotonin is popularly thought to be a contributor to feelings of wellbeing and happiness. Flowers can help stimulate a sense of pride and excitement with others, and release serotonin – whether you grow them, buy them, give them, receive them or admire them from a distance. Often called the “love hormone,” oxytocin is associated with empathy, trust, and relationship building. Flowers communicate the intention to invest effort in a relationship, helping you to connect with and feel closer on an emotional level to people around you. The reason why flowers are able to do this is that it gives you a connection to nature, to something beyond your normal, fast-paced environment. Colours also make you happier through chromotherapy, which uses colour to balance “energy” lacking from a persons body, whether it be physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental levels.
In this folio we celebrate flowers and offer arrangements that can help make these difficult times even a little better. The arrangements are scientifically and botanically correct but not necessarily complete with more emphasis is placed on the aesthetic value of the plant or flower but without the requirement for ALL the information required by the botanists. The arrangements offered were created by the greatest botanical artists that have ever been.
The very fine, wonderfully detailed/textured and finely and accurately coloured plates offered where printed (on thick and heavy paper) and finished by hand in the late 1950's and include several produced off the original stipple engraving plates created by the botanical masters included in the folio. The plates were a limited edition and can be considered rare. They are very special and wonderful.
Here we offer a very elegant 'Verbenas Varietals' lithograph by James Andrews (England. 1801–1876). The study is finely observed and wonderfully colourful with dense (blue, white, pink and purple) flower spikes packed full of small, five petalled, flowers. The leaves opposite, simple, and densely hairy add interest and contrast. The family Verbenaceae contains about 250 species of flowering plants with most species being native to the Americas and Asia. Verbena officinalis, the common vervain, is the type species and native to Europe. This is a wonderful plate.
Framing:
This beautiful chromolithograph has been professionally remounted in a bespoke handmade and hand-gilded gold frame (has simply wonderful oxidation and warm gold tones), the confidently proportioned off-white mount is decorated, and a fine and delicate gold beading has been used as a sophisticated contrast to the plate. All materials used are of archival quality and acid free. The glass is museum quality with low reflection, amazing colour transparency and high U.V. absorption to protect the works. The quality materials and expert techniques used will ensure your artwork is protected for many, many years to come.
Shipping is not included in the price shown. We ship Internationally.
