Within a contemporary oak frame and glazed.
Artist and writer, born in Poland. Studied at Warsaw Academy of Art, 1925-30, then travelled to Italy and France in the late 1930s. From the age of 20 he was a prolific contributor to books and periodicals in Poland. Although he had settled in England in 1935 he was an official Polish war artist during World War II, depicting the Battle of Britain but also serving widely overseas. He also designed for the theatre drew his huge Cavalcade of the Commonwealth for the festival of Britain, 1951, just one year after this drawing was finished. Topolski was a rapid sketcher and drew many famous people including Winston Churchill. He was a pictorial journalist whose febrile, hectic line is instantly recognisable. His work is held by the British Museum, Tate Gallery and the Imperial War Museum.
