Artist Biography
Charles Sillem Lidderdale is a very well known, highly regarded and well collected Victorian artist. He was a genre artist who specialised in head and shoulder paintings of young attractive women. He exhibited at the Royal Academy on 36 occasions and at the British Institute many times. His paintings often come up at the major auction houses and usually make well into 4 figures.
Painting Details
This is a lovely example of Lidderdale’s work when he was at the top of his game. Depicting a farm girl looking straight out, she has piercing eyes and wry smile that seem to show that she knows something that we do not. She is clearly very attractive and makes a very appealing painting. The painting is beautifully painted and monogrammed in the bottom right CSL ( the monogram is rubbed). The painting is inscribed on the reverse with the artists details(added at a later date.
The painting is offered in an attractive gilt frame.
