F. Gabriel 1893-1993 attrib. Oil Panel Still Life
We are offering this beautifully executed Still Life Oil on Panel which we are attributing to the French artist Francois Gabriel and which is signed Gabriel in the lower centre. This painting may have been executed in his later years, as the signature is not easily read. Francois Gabriel often signed F. Gabriel, but we have found some auction results for his work signed Gabriel and he also often signed in red or orange.
The painting depicts an urn full of flowers, including pink and white peonies, hibiscus, auriculas and a poppy, on a marble ledge, with drops of dew on some of the petals, as shown. There are some peaches and a bunch of grapes on the ledge below the urn. The composition is very pleasing to the eye.
Francois Gabriel 1893-1993 specialised in still life paintings either on canvas or panel in a style reminiscent of the Dutch artist Jan van Huysum. He has 97 auction results listed on artprice.com and there are also examples of his work on google.
Jan van Huysum also spelled Huijsum (15 April 1682 – 8 February 1749), was a Dutch Painter. He was the brother of Jacob van Juysum, the son of the flower painter Justus van Huysum, and the grandson of Jan van Huysum I. Some of the finest of van Huysum's fruit and flower pieces have been in English private collections: those of 1723 in the Earl of Ellesmere's gallery, others of 1730-1732 in the collections of Hope and Ashburton. One of the best examples is now in the National Gallery, London (1736–1737). No public museum has finer and more numerous specimens than the Louvre, which boasts of four landscapes and six panels with still life then come Berlin and Amsterdam with four fruit and flower pieces then St Petersburg, Munich, Hanover, Dresden, the Hague, Brunswick, Vienna, Carlsruhe, Boston and Copenhagen. Van Huysum had several followers, such as Jan van Os and Johannes de Bosch.
The painting is framed in a 4" swept, mottled gilt frame and slip. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
