F. E. Jamieson Oil Canvas Kilchurn Castle Loch Awe F E Jamieson Oil Painting Canvas %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for auction this lovely oil on canvas by the artist F. E. JAMIESON, who flourished between 1885 and 1940 and who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner with his pseudonym W. Richards and inscribed it verso 'Loch Awe N.B.' The N.B. stands for North Britain. The painting depicts a view of Loch Awe, with Kilchurn Castle positioned centrally, with the peak of Ben Cruachan in the background. We understand that Kilchurn Castle was one of F. E. J's favourite views. Loch Awe is the longest Scottish loch and is 23 miles long and covers 15 square miles. Ben Cruachan is just under 3,300 feet and overlooks both Loch Awe and Loch Etive.

F. E. Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolour of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolours have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolours are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamieson's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of an oil. Jamieson is known to have travelled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'.

Work by F. E. Jamieson can be seen at artprice.com (533 auction results), other auction sites and on google images, under F. E. Jamieson and W. Richards, as well as in our sold section, as we have sold over the last decade or so, over a hundred of his works.

Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc., although he is most commonly known as Francis. As there has never been a biography of him that gives birth and death dates or any other details about his life, it may well be that all these names are pseudonyms. You may also find some listings under his various pseudonyms of Arnould Pienne, Graham Williams, Aubrey Ramus, J. H. Boel, F. Walters, Joel Owen, Henry Cooper, H. James, Stanley Graham, Montgomery Ansell, H. B. Davis, Stanley Penn, A. de Perrin, C.Frater, W. Richards, etc .

The painting has been framed in a 2 3/8" simple gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
