F. E. Jamieson Fl.1885-1940 Oil Sunset Loch Angler
![](http://images.antiquesatlas.com/b_sold.png)
![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
This is a large oil painting on canvas by the listed British artist Francis E. JAMIESON, who flourished between 1885 and 1940 and is signed with his pseudonym W. Richards in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a view of a Scottish loch at sunset, with the sun sinking below the mountains in the background. There is a path along the edge of the loch and, sitting near to a group of trees, is an angler.
Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolour of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolours have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most fequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolours are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamieson's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of an oil. Jamieson is known to have travelled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'.
Work by Francis Jamieson can be seen at artprice.com (387 auction results), and the usual sites. Examples can be found on google. Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc.
The painting has been framed in an ornate 3 1/2" swept, antiqued gilt frame and is ready to hang.
Image size: 29 1/2" x 19 1/2" - 75cm x 49.5cm
Frame size: 36 1/2" x 26 1/2" - 93cm x 67cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good - there is overall craquelure commensurate with age, but the painting is clean and has no stretcher marks, repairs or visible overpainting. The frame is new.
