Everett W.Mellor 1878-1965 Oil The Wharfe Beamsley

1 of 6
We are delighted to offer for sale this superb oil on board by the artist Everett Watson Mellor, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner Everett W. Mellor. This is one of a pair by this artist that we are currently listing. The painting is entitled on the original mount 'The Wharfe, near Beamsley E. W. Mellor'. The painting depicts the River Wharfe in Yorkshire near Beamsley, meandering its was through verdant and wooded banks, with a flock of sheep glazing on the slope to the right.
Everett Watson Mellor was born in Holborn, London in 1878. He was a painter in oils and watercolours of lakeland and Yorkshire scenes. He was the grandson of the artist Joseph Mellor 1827-1888 and the eldest son of William Mellor 1851-1931. His brother Leonard H. Mellor was also an artist.
He was taught to paint by his father, with whose work his is often confused. He never married and was still living with his parents William and Mary in 1911, at the age of 33, where the family lived at 78 Dragon Road, Harrogate. He later lived in Ilkley, but moved to Middlesbrough in his later years, where he died in 1965. He is sometimes referred to as Everett William Mellor and Everett W. Mellor, but his correct name according to his birth registration is Everett Watson Mellor.
His paintings achieve high prices, and a pair of 12" x 8" oils on canvas achieved £2,400 at Tennants, Leyburn on 29.3.14, while a pair of 10 " x 14" reached £7,600 also at Tennants on 22.4.04.
Everett's work is rarer than that of his father William, who was very prolific, but there are 85 listings for his work on artprice.com, predominately oils, as well as the other auction sites.
The painting is glazed and is framed in the same deep gilt mount with inscription and the same gilt frame as appears on so many of his paintings. The glazing, mount and frame are all original to the work.
Image size: 13 1/2" x 9 1/2" - 34.25cm x 23.5cm
Frame size: 20" x 16" - 50.8cm x 40.65cm
