Equestrian Note Book by Jenner and Knewstub c.1870
A lovely quality novelty notebook, made by top-quality cast brass in the form of a horseshoe and covered back and front with leather.
The working clasp to the front is signed "Jenner and Knewstub's Patent Clasp" and the push button with the luxury retailer's address 33 St James's St & 66 Jermyn St". Established around 1856 by Frederick Jenner and Fabian James Knewstub, they were located at 33 St James’s Street, and then later in 1862, at 66 Jermyn Street, London. Their work was displayed at the International Exhibition of 1862 and at the International Exposition of 1878 in Paris. They quickly obtained many royal warrants including those to the Russian royal family and Queen Victoria.
This piece dates to around 1870. The are of St James has holds a worldwide reputation for high quality British artistry and craftsmanship. The street is home to London’s finest men’s tailors, shirt makers, suppliers of leather goods, food and wine merchants, restaurants, hotels and art galleries.
This all suggests that this notebook would have been owned by a wealthy gentleman to take to the horse races. The interior retains the original notepad and is lined in leather and silk, with a pocket each side.
A real gem in excellent condition measuring 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 1".
