A very charming, humorous oil painting, English School and dating to the early 20th century.

A group of monks gather around a table to share a laugh over a copy of Punch magazine.

The piece has a number of condition issues but it is a quality painting, well executed with a great sense of realism and fun.

It is signed to the lower right 'J.L. North'. It is presented in a weathered gilt slip frame.

This painting has come direct from a deceased estate, and is being offered unrestored and as found. The paint is flaking in a number of places, with some resulting loss, all as clearly shown. Whilst it would make a good project for a restorer, it could equally be hung and enjoyed as is. The decision is with the new owner.
