English School Naive Oil On Board C.1830
English naive school of a girl in a rose garden c. 1830 in a rosewood frame
This is a very attractivel early 19th century English school - an oil on board in a rosewood frame.
On the verso of the board is an original label marked, "Roberson & Miller' of Long Acre, London, Fine Art suppliers. As they operated only from 1828-1839 this assists with dating very nicely, if the style wasn't enough to date it.
Roberson & Miller, 1828-1839 From 1828 Charles Roberson was in partnership with Thomas Miller (qv), trading as Roberson & Miller at 51 Long Acre. Thomas Miller is said to have been his assistant (Woodcock 1997 p.viii) but there is evidence that he or a man of this name had been trading independently. During the partnership, payments were listed to Roberson, February 1828 to October 1839 (Woodcock 1997 p.184) a final settlement on the partnership being reached on 31 December 1839 (Woodcock 1997 p.viii), when the partnership was dissolved (London Gazette 31 December 1839).
Very good overall condition in terms of the oil with very slight mark to the left of the woman's feet about an inch to the left of her foot. It is hardly noticeable but I mention it for the sake of completeness. It would benefit from a light clean but it is offered here in untouched condition, although the condition of the paint is good. There are some marks and damage to the frame on the corners and slight losses to the rosewood in the middle at the bottom of the frame.
