Elwes & Fitch lithograph - Lilium Monodelphum Lithograph Elwes Fitch %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This fine hand-coloured lithograph of Lilium Monodelphum comes from the most admired work ever produced on Lilies: Henry John Elwes & Walter Hood Fitch's ‘A Monograph of the Genus Lilium’ which was published in London in 1880.

The folio sized book was illustrated by Walter Hood Fitch who was considered one of best botanical illustrators of the 19th Century. The drawings were engraved onto a limestone plate from which prints were taken with water colouring added afterwards by experienced artists. Sir Joseph Hooker described Fitch as an "incomparable botanical artist," with "unrivalled skill in seizing the natural character of a plant." The images from this work proved to be what Blunt calls the "most important achievement of Fitch's later career." (Art of Botanical Illustration, p. 264). Fitch’s monogram ‘WHF’ can be observed engraved in the plate on this print.

Elwes began this work after a voyage to the Himalayas. He had no formal training but was fascinated by the lilies he saw on his journey. The work included nearly every lily then known in cultivation. "He knew what to collect, was determined in his travels to find it, was highly observant in describing the geographical distribution of what he found, and was particularly skilled in propagating specimens he brought back." (Balfour and Baigent).

The lithograph comes in a giltwood frame bearing a label on the reverse for Richard Green and Frank T Sabin, 4 New Bond Street, London. It is therefore probable that this picture was acquired at an exhibition jointly curated by these two prominent art dealers in the 1970's or 80's.

Dimensions:
Frame 49.5 x 69 cm (19 1/2 x 27 1/4 inches)
Internal mount: 36 x 53 cm (14 1/4 x 21 inches)

Condition: The lithograph is in excellent condition and is beautifully framed within a pastel-coloured mount and gilt wood frame. There is a small tear on the right edge which is just visible below the mount but hardly noticeable (see close-up photo).

Delivery: The size of the glazed area is such that we would recommend hand-delivering this picture. Our delivery man's minimum charge is £45 which would apply for all of Mainland England and most of Wales. Obviously, this becomes more cost effective if more than one print is purchased. There are six in this series available.
