Eighteenth Century Welsh oak armchair
I have a number of very good Welsh seventeenth century / early eighteenth century chairs and a drop leaf table from the same period listed this week. Do check out my other listings.
The armchair back is 43.5 inches high and the seat is 17 inches high and it is 23 inches from outside arm to outside arm.
This is a very good large oak armchair. The chair dates to the start of the eighteenth Century, around 1720 - 40. It has large proportions and is typical of Welsh chairs from the period.
The chair is particularly handsome with a good patina from age. Old oak polishes so well! There is wonderful wear to the arms and the front stretcher. It has a vase shaped back splat that was popularised in the reign of Queen Anne and all the joints are pegged. Welsh antique furniture from this period was as good as anything being made.
The chair is in good period condition. It has had a replacement plank on the seat which is slightly raised - see photo and I suspect the crest rail on the very top of the back is a later replacement.
This is a good chair. The simplicity of the design is particularly elegant and the large proportions make it imposing enough to be used as a hall chair or in a country kitchen. Good piece.
