E.H.Boddington 1836-1905 Oil Scots Loch
We are delighted to offer for sale this tranquil oil on canvas by the accomplished member of the Williams family, EDWIN HENRY BODDINGTON, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner with his monogram EHB and dated it 1871. The painting is an morning scene, painted in the exquisite detail that characterises the artist's work. The painting depicts an early morning duck shoot, with two men out on a loch in a fishing boat. One of them is aiming a gun at some ducks that are flying low over the water. There is a range of mountains behind the loch, illuminated by the rays of the rising sun, which are also reflected in the water. There are some sheep grazing on the bank just above the rocky beach on the left of the painting. The work bears a considerable resemblance to the detailed oils of his uncle Arthur Gilbert (Williams).
This painting is one of a pair by this artist that we are currently listing.
EDWIN HENRY BODDINGTON, 1836-1905, was the son of HENRY JOHN BODDINGTON 1811-1865, formerly Henry John Williams, who changed his name from Williams to Boddington after his marriage to Clara Boddington in 1832, in order to avoid confusion with the other members of the Williams family. Edwin lived in London and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1854-1866, but more often at the British Institution and Suffolk Street. His subjects were mainly views of the Thames, painted in a calm evening light, using a range of very dark greens and browns. Biographical details for this artist can be found in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the book by J. Reynolds entitled The Williams Family of Painters (Pub. 1975).
