Edwardian Silver Swivel Mirror, Chester, 1902
Here we have a beautiful Edwardian Sterling Silver Swivel Dressing Table Mirror. The mirror is oval with a bevelled edge and sits inside a scroll and flower decorated frame. The stand is also scroll and flower decorated and has a blank central cartouche. The strut at the back is brass in order to support the weight of the mirror.
The swivel mirror was made by Arthur Johnson Smith in Birmingham and assayed in Chester in 1902. Arthur Johnson Smith established his firm at the Variety Works in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in the 1880s. He specialised in items for personal use, particularly dressing table sets, buckles, hat pins and stands, trinket boxes and belts. He had marks registered in both Birmingham and Chester. The firm remained in business into the late 1920s.
Condition is good with just a few small spots on the mirror. There are no dings or dents in the silver and overall there is just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mirror is 17.8cm / 7ins high, 12.4cm / 4.9ins across and 4cm / 1.6ins deep with the strut opened. It weighs 214.4g / 7.56oz.
The hallmarks, on the back of the stand, are somewhat rubbed biut can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter B for 1902 and the A.J.S makers' mark for Arthur Johnson Smith.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mirror.
