Edwardian Silver Specimen Vase, Birmingham, 1903
Here we have an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Specimen Vase. The vase has a circular weighted base from which the three lobed stem tapers outwards to the trumpet shaped crown which has a beaded rim.
The vase was made in Birmingham for London retailer A. Willis & Co and dates to 1903. A. Willis & Co were retail silversmiths in London’s prestigious Hatton Garden district in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They commissioned pieces from silversmiths in London, Birmingham and Sheffield to sell in their high end store and their mark is usually seen on small silver gift items.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of shallow waves in the rim of the base plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 16cm / 6.3ins high and is 5.5cm / 2.2ins in diameter across the top rim. It weighs in at 90.7g / 3.2oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, on the upper trumpet section, are somewhat rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the A.W in a heart shape sponsors' mark for A.Willis & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
