Edwardian Silver Letter Opener, W. Devenport, 1903
This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Handled Letter Opener. The blade is highly polished steel and the handle has an embossed flower and scroll pattern on it. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The letter opener is made in Birmingham by William Devenport and dates to 1903. William Devenport founded his firm in the early 1890s in the heart of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. Quickly successful, the company produced a huge range of silverware. After William's death in the early 1930s, the company became William Devenport & Co and remained in business into the early 1950s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The letter opener is 20.1cm / 7.9ins long and weighs 33.4g / 1.17oz.
The hallmarks on the handle are necessarily small but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the W.D makers' mark for William Devenport. The other side of the handle has a partial set showing the lion passant and the date letter d.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
