1 of 6
We are delighted to offer for sale this very large oil on canvas by the internationally known Victorian artist EDMUND MORISON WIMPERIS, 1835-1900, who has signed the painting E. M. WIMPERIS in the lower left hand corner and dated it 93 for 1893. The painting was sold by Sothebys twenty years ago and they entitled it A Bridge in the Highlands.
EDMUND MORISON WIMPERIS VPRI, RBA, ROI, was a British landscape painter in both oils and watercolour, who was born in Chester in 1835, but later lived in London. His christian name of Morison was his mother's maiden name. He originally studied wood engraving under Mason Jackson and under Myles Birket Foster. He worked under Jackson as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News and other magazines. Two of his sisters were also exhibited artists.
He took up both oil and watercolour painting and exhibited from 1859 at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Grosvenor Gallery and New Gallery. He changed from Birkett Foster's stippled style to a broader style when influenced by David Cox. His oils are mainly sweeping landscapes with half the canvas being sky and are immediately recognisable, having gone on sketching trips with Thomas Collier in the 1870s and 1880s. He painted scenes in Scotland, Wales, Devon and Cornwall.
He was elected Associate Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1873, a full Member in 1875 and, after working as their treasurer, became their Vice President in 1895. He was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1870 and a full Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1893.
Full biographical details for this artist may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child and The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. L. Mallalieu, whose biography of Edmund Wimperis is available on google.
