Edgar Bingley 1854-1930 Oil Wistful Flowergirl
We are offering for sale this very evocative oil painting by the Birmingham artist Edgar Bingley, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a wistful looking girl selling flowers, who is standing by an entrance, with steps to the left and iron railings to the right. She is wearing a skirt and bodice with white blouse and a checked shawl around her shoulders. Her blonde hair is covered by a scarf tied at the back and she is barefoot. She is carry a basket of flowers. To her left is a terracotta pot containing geraniums.
Edgar Bingley was born in Wolverhampton Staffordshire in 1854, but the family moved at some stage to Birmingham, where he spent the rest of his life. In various census records, he is listed as a Clerk, Solicitor's Clerk and latterly as a Managing Clerk. It must have paid quite well, as at some stage, his family had a servant. Presumably, this also allowed him to indulge in painting, and he exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham between 1883 and 1929, a total of 21 paintings. He died in Birmingham in 1930 at the age of 75 years, and exhibited until a year before his death.
His work must only come to the market rarely, as we can only find 3 auction records in recent years.
The painting has been newly framed in a very nice 3" frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
