We are offering for sale this large oil painting on very fine canvas laid to board by the artist Donald Ayres, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts Teston Bridge on the River Medway in Kent, on an early sunny morning, with the mist still hanging over the River. This bridge, which sits is a slight valley is a favourite spot for local artists and is situated about four miles south west of Maidstone.

Donald Ayres was born in Bexhill on Sea in 1936 and was initially apprenticed to a jeweller, but longing for a more open air life, he joined the Royal Navy and served for eight years. On his return he worked for a short while in advertising but, after a fairly long illness when in his late twenties, his wife put some of his sketches into a local shop, where they sold immediately and he decided to become a full time artist.

He has lived and worked in Sussex, Hampshire, Kent, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Wales and Scotland where he ran his own gallery. He now lives in Derbyshire at the edge of the Peak District.

When in Wales, he taught Wildlife painting at Dyfed College of Art. He has exhibited nationally, including in Harrods and also in Europe and America. He has written two books, 'Donald Ayres' Exmoor' and 'Exmoor Revisited', the latter being published in 2006.
