Dewhurst's Sylko Haberdashery Shop Reel Box c1938
We have for sale a late 1930s Dewhurst's of Skipton Sylko haberdashery shop display cotton reel box complete with a a total of 66 Dewhurst's Silko cotton reals dating from around 1938 to the 1970s.
This cream coloured wooden Dewhurst Sylko cotton reel display box caries the Dewhurst's Sylko label introduced in 1938 on the top, back and two ends, and contains 3 wooden fronted interchangeable drawers, each with eight compartments capable of holding 6 cotton reals. The drawer fronts all carry advertising information and the cotton reels contained within carry labels used between 1938 and 1954, 1954 to about 1970 and a couple dating to around 1973 when the company was sold to Calico Printers.
The box is 5.5 inches high, 13.5 inches (34.3cm) wide, 8.75 inches (24.8cm) deep and is in a good condition, with the aging one would expect from a commercial display cabinet of this period.
Dewhurst Sylko Company History
The Dewhurst's Cooton company was initially founded in 1798 in a former corn mill at Elslack near Skipton by a Thomas Robert Dewhurst's. He converted the building into a cotton thread manufactury. By 1928 the company had expanded and built the Bellu Vue Mills in Skipton Yorkshire from where Dewhurst's cotton threads were exported across the British Empire. The Sylko brand was introduced in 1897 and became internationally well known for manufacturing high quality cotton threads in more than 500 different shades. The company continued to trade using the Dewhurst's Sylko brand through the 20th century until it was sold to Callco Printers (Tootal) in 1973.
