Deborah Jones 1921-2012 Trompe L'Oeil Oil
We are very pleased to offer this superb Trompe L'Oeil Oil Painting on canvas by the artist Deborah Jones, who has signed the painting on the little card pinned to the front of the table and dated it 1975, in Roman numerals. The painting depicts a bench or table in a flower room, with illustrations of flowering plants, probably most of them orchids, mounted on the wall. There is an open book of flower illustrations with a pink ribbon bookmark, a bundle of similar illustrations to the left tied up with pink ribbon and a green china vase of white flowers including daises. There are various seed pods and bulbs on the table and in a glass jar to the right, along with three coloured glass bottles of differing sizes. Hanging on a nail with a label attached, is a large antique key. (Could this be the key to the secret garden?)
Deborah Jones was born on 25th April 1921 and never married. She was known for her trompe l'oeil paintings, often including her dolls, teddy bears, old books and items of ephemera that she collected on her travels, still life studies and street scenes of antique shops, tea rooms, florists, bakers etc., all set in a bygone age. She was a totally self-taught artist, who had a natural talent from childhood.
She moved to Bristol after the death of her father and when her home was bombed in 1941, the sole survivor of her things was her teddy bear Lexi, who became a favourite subject of her toy paintings for the rest of her life and was with her when she sadly died on Christmas Eve 2012.
After moving to London, she spent time in the Victoria & Albert Museum absorbing the fashions of earlier years and displaying her canvases on the railings of the Bayswater Road. She was soon exhibiting all over the UK and in France, Italy and America. In 1975, Cary Grant attended on of her exhibitions of teddy bear paintings in London and bought all 20 of the paintings. Frank Sinatra also owned some of her work.
She also worked on sets, costumes and props in the West End, the Opera, British Film Studios, the Royal Ballet, where she dressed Margot Fonteyn and travelled widely.
She returned to Bristol in the mid 1970s where she continued her painting career in a house full of teddies, including her beloved Lexi, dolls, collections of ephemers and her cats.
In 1987 Deborah Jones drew a bear in her sketchbook, took it to Andrew Brownsword, who ran a greetings card company and he agreed to market it as a card and so the Forever Friends bear was born. The company was taken over by Hallmark, who expanded the range and Deborah worked for them at the Hallmark studio in Bath until 2000, when she retired.
She was quite a prolific artist and her auction results may be found at the usual sites, including artprice. There are two biographies/obituaties available online which may shed even more light on this talented artist, but we have attempted to cover the highlights.
The painting is framed in a 3 1/8" dark painted and gilded wooded frame, with gilt slip and white inner slip. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
