David W. Haddon 1859-1941 Oil Portrait of Soldier
We are very pleased to offer for sale this small oil on Academy board portrait of a soldier by the Birmingham artist David W. Haddon, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The portrait depicts a head and shoulders portrait of a soldier, wearing a comb morion helmet and a simple breastplate held on by leather straps and buckles. He has brown eyes and an amazing moustache.
David W. Haddon was a Birmingham artist, who painted in Cornwall at some stage in his life, as his paintings of Cornish fishermen and fishwives are well known. He is listed on the cornwallartists website. He painted primarily in oil and, occasionally, watercolours and exhibited 35 paintings at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, as well as 1 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. As well as Cornish folk, he painted Chelsea Pensioners, jesters, old ladies in the kitchen and other genre subjects.
We have done some research in the Births, Marriages and Deaths records, and suggest that his full name is David Wood Haddon, 1859-1941, who was born in Northamptonshire, and who died in Bromsgrove, south west of Birmingham.
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club).
David Haddon was quite a prolific artist as will be evidenced by the number of auction results listed at artprice (258).
The painting has been newly framed in a 2 3/4" gilt frame and slip and is ready to hang.
