Daniel Sherrin 1869-1940 Oil Killin Scotland
We are delighted to offer for auction this lovely oil on canvas by the artist DANIEL SHERRIN, who has signed the painting with his pseudonym L. Richards in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a river landscape with high, mist covered mountains in the background. The artist has entitled the painting verso on the stretcher 'In the neighbourhood of Killin'. Killin is a village in Stirling, formerly in Perthshire, and has two rivers in its locality, the River Dochart and the River Lochay. This painting is probably of the River Lochay, north of Killin.
To quote from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents'
'Daniel Sherrin was born in Brentford, Essex in 1868, the son of John Sherrin R.I., the well known flower and still life painter. There is no record of him receiving a formal art training but it is probable that he studied with his father. Most of Daniel Sherrin's work is in the style of several popular artists of the time. He painted rural landscapes after the style of Benjamin W. Leader, marines after Montague Dawson and river scenes in watercolour after Stuart Lloyd. He did not exhibit in London, but preferred to work directly under contract for a gallery, painting the subject (and styles) that they required. He also painted under the pseudonym of L. Richards and these are quite often seen on the market. The family moved to Ramsgate, Kent, when Daniel was a young boy and his father died there in 1896. Daniel Sherrin later moved to Seasalter, near Whitstable, Kent and died there on 26th January 1940. The artistic talent was carried to a third generation for his son Reginald Daniel Sherrin was also an artist.' (One of his typically large watercolours is illustrated in this book).
Auction records for prices achieved by works of this artist are readily available in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market, artprice (620 listings), artnet (492) and findartinfo (246).
The painting is newly framed in a 3" ornate, swept gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
