Countess Of Westmorland Circle Of Godfrey Kneller portrait lady oil painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Large 17th Century English Baroque Oil Painting – Aristocratic Lady – Circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller
A fine and impressive 17th Century English Baroque oil painting on canvas depicting a young aristocratic lady traditionally identified as Elizabeth, Countess of Westmorland (1648–1667).
This substantial antique Old Master portrait is attributed to the Circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646–1723), Principal Painter to the Crown and the leading portrait artist of Restoration England. While documentary confirmation of the sitter has not survived, the identification has accompanied the painting in prior market references.
The portrait displays the grandeur, dignity and decorative authority associated with late 17th Century English aristocratic portraiture.
Description & Artistic Detail
The sitter is shown three-quarter length in a classic vertical format typical of English Baroque portrait painting. Her head turns gently toward the viewer while her body is poised with composure, conveying elevated social status and refinement.
She is dressed in a richly painted golden silk gown, the fabric rendered in sweeping folds of amber and warm ochre tones. The artist’s use of glazing and tonal depth creates a convincing sense of texture and movement in the drapery. White lace cuffs and chemise sleeves add delicate contrast against the rich gold palette.
Her complexion is softly modelled in the refined manner associated with portraits from Kneller’s artistic circle.
The background features a romanticised river landscape beneath a glowing sunset sky, a recognised device in 17th Century English noble portraiture symbolising estate culture, lineage and continuity.
Historical Context
If the traditional identification is correct, Elizabeth, Countess of Westmorland lived during the Restoration period following the return of Charles II in 1660. Portraiture at this time played an essential role in expressing lineage, stability and aristocratic identity.
She is recorded as having died at approximately nineteen years of age. During the late 17th Century it was not uncommon for idealised portraits to be commissioned to preserve the memory and social standing of young members of noble families.
Portraits of this size would originally have been displayed in the principal reception rooms of English country houses or town residences, forming part of dynastic family collections.
About the Artist – Circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller
This painting is attributed to the Circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller, meaning it was executed by a contemporary artist working within Kneller’s stylistic influence.
Sir Godfrey Kneller became Principal Painter to the Crown after the accession of William and Mary in 1688 and dominated English portraiture into the early 18th Century. His studio set the standard for aristocratic portrait painting in England.
Works attributed to his circle retain the compositional elegance, refined modelling and decorative presence characteristic of English Baroque art of the period.
