C.L.Fripp Watercolour Queen Elizabeth's Virginal
We are offering for sale this lovely and historically interesting watercolour by the artist Constance Lydia Fripp, who has signed the painting C. L. Fripp in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso. The painting depicts Queen Elizabeth's Virginal or spinet, attributed to Giovanni Baffo, Venice circa 1594, which is currently in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. There is a tapestry on the wall behind a carved chair with a small lute type instrument on the seat and a larger version standing in the corner. In front of the virginal is another carved chair with a red velvet coat with lace cuffs hanging from one arm and a white hat with a blue ribbon and a pair of long gloves on the floor. The painting has been executed with fine detail.
Constance Lydia Fripp A.S.W.A. was born in Clifton, Bristol on 8th April, 1937, the daughter of a Doctor, George Downing Fripp and is probably related to the Fripp family of painters, who also came from Bristol. She was listed as an artist in the Census of 1881, was living in Hampstead in 1891 and died, unmarried, in Hammersmith in 1918.
Her London exhibition history is listed as between 1869 and 1892 in Graves Dictionary, where she exhibited 17 paintings during this period, including 1 at the Royal Academy and 7 at Suffolk Street.
She is listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) which shows her exhibitions between 1882 and 1900, including 26 at the Society of Women Artists, where she was elected an Associate Member in 1891.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and newly framed in a 1 3/8" bronze frame. It will be supplied glazed, wired and ready to hang.
