Clarence Roe 1850-1909 Oil North Wales
We are offering for sale this very large oil on canvas by the artist CLARENCE HENRY ROE, who has signed the painting Clarence Roe in the lower left hand corner and signed and entitled it verso. Unfortunately, part of the writing has been obscured by previous restoration but we have managed to make out the first part of Capel Curig and lower down it says Moel Siabod North Wales, so we assume that it is a view of Moel Siabod from Capel Curig, showing a tributary of the River Lledr. This location was a favourite of artists of the period, including John Finnie, Benjamin Williams Leader R.A. and Sidney Richard Percy (Williams) all of whom painted similar scenes. There is a small herd of cattle on the far bank of the river and a storm is approaching the mountain.
CLARENCE HENRY ROE, 1850-1909, was the son of Robert Henry Roe and Emma Baily, the daughter of the sculptor of Nelson's column. His two brothers, Colin Graeme and Robert Ernest, were also listed artists. Some Dictionaries state that Clarence was born in Glasgow and some that he was born in Birmingham. He is also given an address in London at Tottenham Court Road, although Professor Dennis Child, in his book Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales states that he spent most of his time living a Bohemian life in his studio in Yorkshire.
He exhibited two paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1887, but obviously did not need to exhibit his work constantly in order to make a living. He was a prolific painter of Highland scenes, Lake District landscapes and marine scenes, sometimes including animals and birds.
His auction results may be viewed at artprice.com (303 listings), artnet.com (166), findartinfo.com (111), askart.com (29) and arcadja.com (95). His works often appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and in 2006, 8 of his oils were sold by Bonhams of Knowle at prices ranging from £260 - £4,800. He is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists.
The painting is newly framed in a 3" swept gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
