Clarence H. Roe 1850-1909 Lge Oil Lake District
We are pleased to offer for sale this very large oil on canvas by the artist CLARENCE HENRY ROE, who has signed the painting Clarence Roe in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a view of the two lakes in the Thirlmere Valley possibly with Skidaw in the centre background. Sunlight is falling on the mountains to the right of the lakes and, in the foreground is a small waterfall where the waters of the lake are gushing over some rocks into a stream.
We have been able to date this painting to prior to 1889, because in that year Manchester Corporation purchased the Thirlmere valley, dammed the two lakes, drowning two villages, and turned it into the Thirlmere Reservoir, which provides water for Manchester via a system of 100 miles of pipes. They planted forests of dark pine trees around the reservoir. We have seen a painting of Thirlmere dating to the 1840s by J. B. Pyne and the lakes and surrounding woodlands look very similar to this painting.
CLARENCE HENRY ROE, 1850-1909, was the son of Robert Henry Roe and Emma Baily, the daughter of the sculptor of Nelson's column. His two brothers, Colin Graeme and Robert Ernest, were also listed artists. Some Dictionaries state that Clarence was born in Glasgow and some that he was born in Birmingham. He is also given an address in London at Tottenham Court Road, although Professor Dennis Child, in his book Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales states that he spent most of his time living a Bohemian life in his studio in Yorkshire.
He exhibited two paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1887, but obviously did not need to exhibit his work constantly in order to make a living. He was a prolific painter of Highland scenes, Lake District landscapes and marine scenes, sometimes including animals and birds.
His auction results may be viewed at artprice.com (303 listings), artnet.com (166), findartinfo.com (111), askart.com (29) and arcadja.com (95). His works often appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and in 2006, 8 of his oils were sold by Bonhams of Knowle at prices ranging from £260 - £4,800. He is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists. To see further examples of his work, please look on google.
The painting is newly framed in a 3 1/2" ornate, swept gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
