A portrait of a gentleman in a brown coat by Circle of John Linnell (1792-1882).

Provenance: Christies (South Kensington), 11 January 2006, lot 505, as Circle of John Linnell.

The work is very well executed with great verve. There is a light craquelure in areas and a linear indentation to the canvas to the top left (please see photographs) but overall the work remains in a very good condition throughout. The work is housed in a gilt frame with a cream canvas mount. There is a partially legible inscription verso.

A striking work and a definite talking piece.
