Circle Chas.S.Lidderdale Portrait Oil

We are delighted to offer for auction this lovely portrait by an artist in the circle of Charles Sillem Lidderdale. By 'circle of' we mean in our opinion a work of the period of the artist, which may or may not be by the artist. The painting is a portrait study of a young girl, not old enough to put her hair up, dressed for the outdoors in a dark cape style coat, with her hands in a fur muff. She is wearing her hair loose, under a large red beret. There is a large bow at the neck of the coat, with the glimpse of a white dress or blouse underneath. The clothing reminds us very much of the costume worn by Jenny Agutter in the film The Railway Children.
Charles Sillem Lidderdale 1830-1895, was born in St. Petersburg of British parents, but resided for most of his life in St. John's Wood, London. He suffered from poor eyesight and was forced to give up painting in watercolours but continued to paint in oils. He exhibited 36 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1856 and 1893. He also exhibited at the British Institution and Suffolk Street. He specialised in pastoral scenes featuring pretty young women, often farm girls or servant girls and his paintings were usually of relatively small size.
There is a wealth of information about him on google and his auction results are available at the usual sites, including findartinfo.com, artprice.com, artnet.com and arcadja.com. His painting fetch very considerable prices at auction.
This painting on canvas is certainly of the period that he was painting and, even paintings attributed to him fetch very good prices.
The painting is framed in a very nice swept dull gilt frame that suits it very well and does not detract from the subject of the painting.
