Christofle Silver Plated Scallop Dish, c.1880-1920
This is a top quality silver plated scallop shell dish by Christofle from the late 19th / early 20th century.
Christofle are one of the most famous names in luxury tableware around the world. Founded in France in 1830 by Charles Christofle, the firm really took off when they acquired the French rights to Elkington's patent electroplating system. They quickly established a reputation for quality that is still with them today.
This dish was probably designed as a butter dish but could be used for any table sauce. Alternatively it would make a very attractive trinket dish for a dressing table or is indeed simply an elegant decorative piece in its own right.
The shell dish is in very good condition with no plate loss, except for a tiny spot on the bottom of each bun foot, which is virtually inevitable after so many years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 10.5cm across, 12.3cm from lip to handle and stands 2.4cm high. It weighs 94g.
The underside is marked with the Christofle name and the particular diamond shaped lozenge that was used between around 1880 and around 1920. It's not possible to date it more accurately than that.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
