Christian Berthelsen, Rural Landscape With Lake
A charming late 19th-century landscape painting depicting a view across fields to a lake and distant church.
A farmer is raking hay atop a horse-drawn cart while a woman, perhaps his wife, is looking on. While down at the lake, three figures appear to be fishing as a sailboat passes by.
The artist, Christian Berthelsen (1839-1909), is known for his restful landscapes - particularly of views in the Svendborg area. Several of his works have appeared at Christie’s including ‘Returning From The Coast At Dusk’, which sold in 2012.
The painting is monogrammed in the lower right and housed with a period gilded frame with foliate and a decorative outer border.

Overall size: 33” x 23½” / 84cm x 60cm
Year of creation: c. 1890
Provenance: Denmark
Condition: Light craquelure in areas and a few minor losses. Could be cleaned to restore its vibrancy if required. Frame with various signs of age-related wear.
Artist’s auction highlight: £3,502 achieved for ‘Children's birthday by Emilie Kilde, Klampenborg’ at an auction in Denmark in 2000. Our inspections include a check for any signs of woodworm, historic or otherwise, as this is not unusual in antique frames or stretchers. If we discover any small holes, we treat the wood with a solution which states that "its deep penetration ensures effective protection for many years and prevents re-infestation". With this in mind, it's very unlikely that any future issues will occur, especially given that the wood may also have been treated by previous owners. However, as mentioned above, we are unable to provide any warranties or guarantees - just be assured that we care.
Also, many of the paintings include hanging equipment, namely wire or string. Sometimes this is already present when we purchase an item so we check to see if it's been attached correctly. However, we can't test the durability of this equipment as many of the paintings are sold quickly. So please do seek any advice if you're unsure how to hang your paintings correctly, especially if they're heavy, and do check on them from time to time.
