Chinese Silkwork Panel Rank Badge / Mandarin Square chinese embroidery badge %%alt5%%
This is a beautiful Chinese embroidery in the form of a rank badge, or Mandarin square,which dates from the early 20th century. A rank badge was sewn onto the robes of an official and the different emblems on the badge reflected the position of the wearer. This one has a central black panel is decorated with floral sprays and two roundels of peacocks, implying it would be worn by a scholar. It has brocade borders and is mounted in a frame and measures 42 cms by 31 cms including the frame.
