Chinese Bronze Buddha On Large Carved Altar,c1850
Fine 19th century Chinese bronze Buddha on large carved altar, c1850. The item divides into 3 pieces, the Buddha, base to the altar and top pediment/surround to the altar.
The Buddha is well cast and heavy for its size weighing 1.3kg. The detail is fine and it has just the right amount of wear to the paint/gilt with great colour/patina. It has character marks on the back and is hollow cast.
The altar is nicely carved with great detail and decoration. The top of the pediment has a dragon finial and the dragons body continues into the main section of the surround. You can clearly see it has been hand carved for instance you can see the chisel work where the pediment fixes to the base of the altar and to the rear and sides (as is often the case with these pieces areas that are not immediately visible are not finished as finely as the facing areas). It has good deep red lacquer decoration.
Overall condition is good in line with age and use. There is minor wear to the bronze. The altar has had some historic repairs (remnants of glue etc) and has small splits/chips but all minor and as you would expect from an older example that has been used over many years. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me with any questions or if you would like to view the item.
Size: Buddha 24cm tall x 11cm wide x 8cm deep ,weighs1.3kg.Altar 53cm tall x27cm wide x 15cm deep ,weighs1.9kg.
