Charles Leslie Oil Welsh Lake Fisherman 1885
We are delighted to offer for sale this well executed oil on canvas by the artist Charles Leslie, who has signed the painting in red in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1885. As this painting has been put on a new stretcher, we do not know the artist's title, however, it is possible that it is Llyn Crafnant, which is close to Llyn Geironydd and has large boulders. This lake apparently has good fishing.
The sun is high in the sky and its light is reflected in the waters of the lake. There is a fisherman, carrying his rod, standing to the right on the large boulder on the right of the painting. On the left bank are some more sheep and there is smoke from a cottage or bonfire to the right hand bank.

CHARLES LESLIE, was a landscape painter, who specialised in Welsh and Scottish scenes. He lived on Wimbledon Common and flourished between 1835 and 1863, when he was exhibiting, although he was obviously still painting in 1885. He exhibited 5 works at the Royal Academy between 1856 and 1862, 3 at the British Institution, 16 at Suffolk Street and 24 at various other London exhibitions. His biographical information is available in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and his exhibition history in Graves Dictionary.

The painting is framed in an ornate 2 3/4" swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
