Charles Leslie Oil Llyn Geironydd Wales dtd 1885
We are delighted to offer for sale this well executed oil on canvas by the artist Charles Leslie, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1885. The artist has entitled the painting on the stretcher verso, and although it is indistinct, we have managed to make out Llyn Geironydd N. Wales. This lake is one of the many jewels of Snowdonia.
The sun is low in the sky and its light is reflected in the waters of the lake. There is a man, possibly a shepherd, standing on a track on the left bank with a small flock of sheep. On the opposite bank are some more sheep and there is a fire burning on a slope above them.
This is one of a pair of paintings by Charles Leslie that we are listing.
CHARLES LESLIE, was a landscape painter, who specialised in Welsh and Scottish scenes. He lived on Wimbledon Common and flourished between 1835 and 1863, when he was exhibiting, although he was obviously still painting in 1885. He exhibited 5 works at the Royal Academy between 1856 and 1862, 3 at the British Institution, 16 at Suffolk Street and 24 at various other London exhibitions. His biographical information is available in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and his exhibition history in Graves Dictionary.

The painting is framed in an ornate 2 3/4" swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
