Charles Leslie 19th C. Oil Windermere
We are pleased to offer for sale this large oil on canvas by the artist CHARLES LESLIE, who has signed the painting Charles Leslie Sen. in the lower right hand corner, dated it 1885 and inscribed it verso on the stretcher Windermere. Windermere is the largest lake in the Lake District in Cumbria. The painting depicts a shepherd looking down on his flock of sheep on the slopes below. The artist has captured the sun's rays reflecting on the still waters of the lake. As is typical of the work of this artist, the whole painting is executed in great detail.

He lived on Wimbledon Common and flourished between 1835 and 1863, when he was exhibiting, although he was still painting in 1882, only eight years before he died in 1890. He exhibited 5 works at the Royal Academy between 1856 and 1862, 3 at the British Institution, 16 at Suffolk Street and 24 at various other London exhibitions. His biographical information is available in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and his exhibition history in Graves Dictionary.
