Charles Leader 19th C. Landscape Oil N. Wales
We have for sale this lovely oil on board by the 19th Century British artist Charles Leader, who has signed the painting C. Leader in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso Capel Curig.
The painting depicts a view of the River Llugwy at Capel Curig in North Wales, on a sunny day, with some storm or rain clouds threatening.
This painting is typical of the work of this artist, who seemed to specialise in river scenes of Scotland, Wales and England. As there is a dearth of biographical information about him, we have conducted a search of the census records from 1871- 1901, and can find no artist by this name working in Britain. We can only assume that it is a pseudonym for another artist. The work and subject matter do bear more than a passing resemblance to that of Benjamin Williams Leader and indeed, Daniel Sherrin.
However, auction results for his work are readily available at artprice.com (67 listings), findartinfo.com (56), artnet.com (45), and arcadja.com(37). His oils commanded prices ranging from £400 - £3,000 in 2003 and 2 oils reached £380 and £680 respectively in 2006. In January 2009, Bonhams sold a 30" x 20" oil for £1,140, and in 2006, Bonhams sold a pair of 16" x 12" for £650.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3" gilt frame and it will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 17 5/8" x 9 5/8" - 44.8cm x 24.45
Frame size: 23 3/4" x 16" - 60.35cm x 40.65cm
Medium: Oils on board
Condition: Very good. The surface is clean and there is no craquelure. The frame is new.
