Charles H. Passey Oil Conwy Waterfall N. Wales
We are offering this lovely oil painting on canvas by the Victorian artist Charles Henry Passey, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and signed and inscribed it verso 'A fall on the Conway North Wales Charles H. Passey'. The painting depicts a view of one of the falls on the River Conwy or Conway in North Wales, where the water gushes over a steep fall into a still pool and then rushes over some small rocks below to continue on its way.
Charles Henry Passey (1847-1898) was born in Potterne, Staffordshire, the son of Edward and Maria Passey. His father was a commercial traveller and the family soon moved to London. He married his wife Helen Samuel in 1878 and in the 1881 Census, they were living at 49 Bromfelde Road, Clapham and Charles was listed as an Artist Landscape Painter. He died in 1898 in Hampstead aged just 50.
According to Graves Dictionary, he exhibited 4 paintings in London exhibitions between 1878 and 1885. There are 2 of his paintings in the National Collection, 1 in Guildford and 1 in Salford Museum and Art Gallery, which is in a shocking condition. He seems to have specialised in paintings landscapes containing cornfields, sometimes sheep and waterfall views. Obviously his somewhat short life will have reduced the number of his paintings in circulation.
The painting is newly framed in a 2 1/4" ornate swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 19 3/8" x 14 3/8" - 49.2cm x 39cm
Frame size: 23 7/8" x 19 7/8" - 60.65cm x 50.5cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. The canvas is clean and taut. There are two repairs to the canvas, but there is no visible evidence to the front. The frame is new.
