We are pleased to offer for sale this impressionist portrait by the Austrian artist Carl Felkel, who has signed the portrait in the bottom left hand corner. The painting is a portrait study of a young woman wearing a yellow blouse, with a black tie at the neck, underneath a grey jumper and skirt. She has dark bobbed hair. Unfortunately, we do not know the name of the subject.

Carl Felkel was born in Austria in 1896, and at some stage, arrived in the UK. We have no early information on his life, but do know that he was interned on the Isle of Man at Hutchinson Camp in the early years of WWII, as he, along with 14 other alien artists, send a letter to Sir Kenneth Clark, c/o The National Gallery, appealing for the category of 'artist' to be added to the 18 categories of internees who could make application for release. As to whether this had any effect, we do not know.

He had travelled extensively in Europe, painting mostly landscapes in oils and watercolours, but was also a Society portraitist and a book illustrator. He lived until his death in the 1980s at 174 Holland Park, London W.11. He apparently flourished in the 1930s.

Auction prices achieved for works by this artist may be found at artprice (35 listings), findartinfo (26), artnet (21) and arcadja (21). The record price for one of his oils that we have managed to find is £1,745 for a study of a boy reading with his dog by his side, which sold at Christie's New York in 2010.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/4" gunmetal coloured frame, which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
