A painting on board of the Converted Barn by Carel Weight CH RA (1908-1997). Signed by the artist bottom right, size 16 x 20 inches.
Private collection,bought in the mid 1970s from the Leonie Jonleigh Studio,Wonersh,Guildford,Surrey. In very good condition in the original exhibition frame.
Born on the 10th September 1908 in Paddington, London, Carel Weight studied at the Hammersmith School of Art 1928-30 and the Goldsmiths' College 1931-33. He first exhibited at the R.A. in 1931 and was made an official war artist from 1945-46, visiting Austria,Italy and Greece. After the war he joined the painting staff at the Royal College of Art, becoming head of painting in 1957 and retiring in 1973. Carel Weight was elected to the Royal Academy in 1965 and held a one man show at the Academy in 1983. He painted landscapes and portraits taking his subjects from the streets,parks and gardens of west and south London where he lived. Many of his paintings have spiritual or religious content showing the influence of Edvard Munch and Stanley Spencer. He was also President of the Stanley Spencer Society.
