C. Law Coppard 1836-1900 Oil 'Evening Mists'
We are delighted to offer for auction this lovely, tranquil oil on canvas by the artist C. LAW COPPARD, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand cover, and on original label verso, where it is entitled 'Evening Mists'. The canvas is dated 1883. The painting depicts cattle watering on a water meadow, on a misty evening, with the crescent moon rising. The artist has conveyed the misty scene with great skill. There is a farmhouse to the left of the painting, with some outbuildings and two haystacks.
Charles Law (Lawrence) COPPARD, 1836-1900, who flourished between 1858 and 1891, was a Sussex artist. He was the son of Lawrence Coppard, a carver and gilder and, in 1851, was living with his parents at 160 North Street Brighton. He married in 1865 in Denbighshire and by 1881, was living with his wife Julia in Eridge Road, Speldhurst, Tonbridge, Kent. He died in Brighton on the 16th February, 1900. He specialised in landscapes and domestic scenes.
He exhibited mostly at Suffolk Street (48 paintings), but exhibited 9 paintings at the Royal Academy, 11 at the British Institution, 11 at the Tooley Gallery and 9 at other London exhibitions. His biographical details may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters and his exhibitions in Graves Dictionary.
Two of his paintings are in the National Collection and may be viewed on BBC - Your Paintings and at Brighton & Hove Museums.
