A pair of large portraits, oil on canvas of John and Agnes Brunskill of Lambrigg Foot Grayrigg Kendal Westmorland.
The paintings are attributed to William Bowness, circa 1840's.The artist painted many local dignitaries. Agnes died in 1849.
John is here reading the Westmorland Gazette founded in 1818, the title type face was still used well into the 20C, This is probably one of the earliest portraits to include the WG. Thomas De Quincey was a very early editor of the paper.
The Brunskill family were well known business people making their money in agricultural products , they married into the Farrer family, another local business name.
