Boulle document holder from Royal Yacht Osborne
A stunning tortoiseshell and brass boulle work document holder that came from the Royal Yacht Osborne. The front of the holder has top quality boulle work, in keeping for a Royal Yacht, and the lifestyle of the day.
The cartouche on the front reads "Her Majesty's Yacht Osborne Dec. 1870".
Although not marked it was more than likely made for Aspreys by J.C. Vickery, who were manufacturers of the highest quality boulle work.
Her Majesty's Yacht Osborne was a paddle steamer and Royal Yacht of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom. Launched on 19 December 1870 at Pembroke Royal Dockyard and it replaced the yacht of the same name formerly known as Her Majesty's Yacht Victoria and Albert.
She measured 1,850 tons, and was used for cruises to foreign countries and later on the short run to Osborne House, the Royal residence, on the Isle of Wight. In 1898 wireless equipment was installed by Marconi. This allowed the Prince of Wales to keep in touch with his mother Queen Victoria, at Osborne House.
The front panel is in very good condition with no damage or wear to the tortoiseshell or the brass boulle work. The front is backed by mahogany. Internally is is also good but has obviously been used, with scuffing to the corners and spine. There are two compartments for document storage.
It measures 11 inches by 9 inches, with one inch depth (without documents).
UK Special delivery with tracking and signature costs £10.00.
