Baron Bernard Willems inspiration and explanation behind the painting: “I wanted to paint a white lady shown as being proud of what she has done in the western world. The (black) lady showing what needs to be done in the Eastern world.
The reason behind this was that in the 1960s I was shocked as to how the lecturers of the faculty were treating the (black) people.
I recall that I had this painting at an exhibition in New York's Central Art Gallery, and I received a letter from a lady who advised me she liked the quality of my paintings but (then said some very derogative things about black people). At that time, black people were being kept separate from white people with regards to buses, schools, public conveniences in the United States.”
