A.Vartanian 1965 Oil Painting Tehran Market Scene
We are pleased to offer for sale this evocative oil painting on canvas by the artist A. Vartanian, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner, entitled it 'Tehran' and dated it 65 for 1965. We have previously sold another painting, which was unsigned, in this very distinctive style, which was also a scene in the soukh and was most probably by this artist.
The painting depicts a busy scene in the soukh in Tehran, the capital of Iran, with a shop to the left, with its wares laid out in large dishes. There is a man with a donkey with two laden paniers walking down the stret, with other figures, including a robed woman. To the right foreground is a man with a white beard and wearing robes and a turban.
Although we have found a couple of listings for this artist, one under the name of A. Yartanian, which was probably an error, we have been unable to find out any more details about him, other than the fact that all the paintings have been orientalist. The surname Vartanian is Armenian in origin.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" black frame with gilt line detail and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
