Arts and Crafts Round Hammered Brass Wall Mirror
A truly original 22 inch diameter circular mirror dating to approximately 1910. These types of mirrors in good original condition are scarce. Constructed from a wooden frame overlaid with a planished brass sheet which in turn has applied/overlaid strapwork decoration. In this instance the mirror also retains its original black painted 'tin' backing, rather than plain exposed timber. It has a period mirror plate with a wide bevel. This brass is intended to be a patinated and lacquered finish rather than bright polished , it gives it a particular aged character which we hope to have captured in the photographs.
The frame is 2 inches wide by 3/4 inch thick, the plate area is 17 1/2 inches diameter and the bevel is 1 inch wide. Each of the applied 'bosses' is 3 1/2 inches long by 1 3/4 inches width and probably stands about 1/2 inch proud on the point of the diamond. Underneath each oval cartouche is a slightly triangulating strap of sheet brass.
The quality of this item is excellent for an item of this nature and construction, the colour, planishing and adornment even the original backing make this a super example. The condition is honest whilst being excellent where it matters, the brass is all tight and properly secure, the plate is unmarked or damaged, the cartouches are all firmly fixed and above all it has not had any added knocks and hammer marks other than the ones intended by the original craftsman. The back is scuffed, but even there its to be expected. We have provided the mirror a light clean, nothing abrasive nor mechanical it is a superb colour and we wouldn't want to see it lessened through over cleaning or polishing.
Please note this is a heavy item, when packed it will be around 7 kg. We assure any buyer , wherever they are in the world, that we will ensure the best and best value for money courier shipping, but check with us for a specific price at point of buying.
We have noted these mirrors as being attributed to Glasgow School of Arts, certainly the style and influence would appear to be right, however as with most there is no catalogue reference to be definitive. Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
We welcome purchases from all over the world, however, we do not take any responsibility or pay for import charges and taxes that non UK purchasers may accrue.
